In the age of social media and the internet, who doesn’t know or at least even heard about the beauty guru and social media influencer, Bretman Rock? The Filipino-American star is an internet sensation who has millions of followers and subscribers on different platforms.
Bretman Rock was born on July 31, 1998, into an Ilocano household in Sanchez-Mira, Cagayan, Philippines. His father, Edmund Laforga, named him after Bret Hart and The Rock because he loved professional wrestling. So yes, “Bretman Rock”, as unusual as it sounds for people to think that this is just a stage name or just a made-up social media handle, is indeed the influencer’s first two names.
When Rock was seven years old, his family relocated to Hawaii, where he grew up playing baseball, soccer, cross-country, and volleyball. He even competed for Campbell High School's track squad. Rock had a strong work ethic, which is what helped him achieve his academic success. Whilst being a star on his school's track team, he had a 3.5 GPA and served on the student council.
He led a pretty typical American youth life, although one that included occasional YouTube and Vine video production. Rock started filming videos in the eighth grade (which are now all deleted), but it wasn't until he was in high school that he hit the big time. When he was 17 years old, one of his humorous YouTube videos called "How to Contour" went viral, catapulting the young man into the public eye, and then, snap! He is famous! Rock accepted his stardom with grace despite his unexpectedly rapid climb to fame.
Since then, Bretman Rock's rise to prominence has continued to go on. Rock began on YouTube and Vine as a comedian and meme maker before switching to vlogs and makeup and beauty tutorials. He is renowned for his witty outlook on life as well. Rock's contouring video went viral in 2016. He was motivated by Talia Joy, a YouTuber, and Patrick Starrr, a makeup artist.
Rock was highlighted on the Gay Times cover for Pride Month in June 2019. He worked with stylist Andrew Gelwicks at his debut New York Fashion Week appearance in September 2019.
Rock debuted his makeup line in early 2020 in association with Wet n Wild cosmetics. To promote the line, he held a press tour in February 2020 in Los Angeles with companies including Buzzfeed, Condé Nast, Hearst, and others.
On May 14, 2021, Rock appeared among other online stars in the music video for Bella Poarch's debut track, "Build a Bitch." Rock received a nomination for an MTV Movie and TV Award in the category of Breakthrough Social Star in June 2021, of which he was declared the winner.
Rock had a brief appearance in the music video for the song "INFERNO" by Sub Urban and Bella Poarch in August 2021. Additionally, he took part in a stream that promoted the video.
Rock made history by being the first openly homosexual man to appear on the Playboy magazine cover in October 2021.
Bretman Rock has demonstrated that perseverance really does pay off — from a high school student to one of the most adored beauty influencers in the world.
