Ajay Bhatt - The Inventor from India

Ever wondered who invented all these cool gadgets that we use in our daily lives? I also. Although adults use them for work, and children use them for school, we fall into a trap to underestimate their coolness. The truth behind the invention is both inspirational, and practical. Here is the story of one of these gadgets and its inventor Ajay Bhatt!

Ajay Batt is originally from Baroda, India. He was born on 06.09.1957 and began his journey at Baroda College. In spite of starting his professional education in India, he finished his studies by graduating from The City University of New York with a master’s degree.

Bhatt holds about 30 US patents and several others in progress. He also received an Achievement in Excellence Award for his amazing participation and efforts in PCI Express specification development, 2002.

As always, behind a great man stands a great woman. What is interesting is that the need for the invention of the USB (Universal Serial Bus) was first seen by Bhatt’s wife when she had to print out a lot of school materials for her child. The problem was that every individual manufacturer used his own type of connectors which forced the purchase of dedicated peripherals. Bhatt’s idea was to create a common, convenient and universal system. He presented the Idea to many companies including Apple, but only Intel decided to develop the concept. In the 1990’s the concept was already used by Apple and Microsoft and today they are displacing almost all other solutions and not just in consumer electronics but also in industrial electronics. He wasn’t financially rewarded for the invention but he explained that the biggest profit from him was that the market for computers is growing and it is becoming more accessible. Also, he stated that his company will sell more products.

Some of the other technologies Bhatt invented are AGP bus which influenced the performance of Graphic cards and its successor the PCI Express Connection. Today it is difficult to imagine technology without the USB standard. All chargers for tablets, mobile devices, game consoles and others are dependent on this standard.

The standard is also accepted in the professional world. It is accepted in both integrated circuits and interface circuits. Regarding native support for high-speed serial connections, it is provided by most modern microcontrollers. This is also the case with platforms such as Arduino. Laboratory equipment and programmers also use this interface. Also, we cannot leave out the products that were inspired by the USB like network adapters (WiFi) and flash drives.

Despite Bhatt’s achievements and success in engineering he is still a very humble person trying to explain the technology to others and its purpose. His USB project could have made him a fortune but he wanted to see more and more people use this technology and benefit from it, as well as see his company grow.

With his USB invention Ajay Bhatt tended to the need of the whole world regarding connection problems, thus confirming that necessity is the mother of invention. And though many call him senseless for losing millions of dollars from this deal he remains humble and on the side of the little man.
