Asian personalities are slowly dominating Hollywood with the continuous release of phenomenal series and movies such as the critically acclaimed Squid Game of South Korea, the high-rating Japanese anime Attack on Titan, Trese which is Netflix’s first Filipino animated series, and the Thai mystery thriller anthology, Girl From Nowhere.
For today’s article, we’ll feature and focus on Girl From Nowhere. The debut of the first season of Girl From Nowhere occurred on August 8, 2018, on GMM 25. It was well-received by the audiences with a 7.6 rating from IMDb, 89% merit on JustWatch, and a grade of 8.5 on MyDramaList. Because it was loved by many, a second season of the show was made globally available on Netflix on May 7, 2021, launching it to prominence around the world. It is now the most-watched Netflix show in Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines, and it also ranks in the top 10 globally in places like Brazil. The use of unique narrative techniques and the show's critiques of contemporary high school culture has won praise from critics.
Girl From Nowhere season 2 was nominated in the Asia Contents Awards 2021 for Best Creative and Best OTT Original. It took the title home as the Best Asian TV Series at the same event. The Thai mystery thriller anthology television series was created by studio SOUR Bangkok and would not have been as successful as it is today without the amazing performance of the Thai actress, Chicha "Kitty" Amatayakul in the lead role.
Born Kanyawee Phumsiridol on August 5, 1993, Chicha “Kitty” Amatayakul is a Thai actress, singer, and model. She formerly belonged to the Kamikaze Records girl group Kiss Me Five, and she began playing the lead role of Nanno in the drama anthology series Girl from Nowhere in 2018. She gained more fame and was introduced to a global audience in 2021 through the second season of Girl from Nowhere.
She went to Chitralada School for Grade 4 and completed her high school education in an international school using the British Curriculum (IGCSE) when she was 15 years old before beginning her higher education at the Assumption University Faculty of Business and Ramkhamhaeng University Faculty of Law.
As a part of the pop group Kiss Me Five, which also comprised Bow Maylada, Bam Pakakanya, Gail Natcha, and Mild Krittiya, Amatayakul joined Kamikaze Records in 2010. Although she’s most popularly known as the actress who played the provoking and interesting character Nanno, she has already appeared in a variety of shows before.
Kitty appeared in a number of projects, working her way up from music videos, TV shows like Love Blood and Lhong Fai, and movies like The Serpent's Song, a short film that was shown at the Shanghai Queer Film Festival. Another movie she starred in that is noteworthy is Net I Die, in which Kitty plays a net idol who live-streams her suicide and haunts people who have wronged her. Kitty is frequently shown playing high school or university students with a humorous persona, as can be seen in the series Daughters where she portrays a schoolgirl with family issues. She also often appears in works in the horror and thriller genres. This may make it clear why the casting crew of Girl from Nowhere believed Kitty was the ideal choice for the one and only Nanno.
