YouTube is one if not the biggest streaming platform in the world. Every video content form is sure to be found in this platform such as music videos, documentaries, live streams, educational videos, vlogs, and many more contents! It makes you wonder how in the world this platform emerged to the success that it is today and believe it or not, one of the founders of this awesome platform is an Asian American!
From the humble headquarters in California, Steve Chen alongside with his workmates in PayPal Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim had noticed that there is no specific location on the internet dedicated to videos. From there, they had an exceptional idea to create a space where people could enjoy uploading and sharing their videos in cyberspace giving birth to YouTube.com on February 14, 2005.
Steve Chen was born in Taipei, Taiwan and migrated to the United States with his family at the age of seven. As early as high school, Chen already showed a lot of interest and potential in the field of mathematics and computer science. He studied at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora and eventually attended the University of Illinois at Urbana as a Computer Science college student. In 2005, Chen became the co-founder of YouTube as well as having the position of chief technology officer. In the following year Chen was recognized by Business 2.0 as one of “The 50 people who matter now” in the field of business.
Just a year after the platform was launched, it was already garnering an approximate of 65,000 new videos uploaded on YouTube per day and there were approximately 100 million views per day. With the immense growth of YouTube, problems in cost and managing arise and at the same year the platform was acquired by Google for 1.65 billion dollars. As of 2022 according to the latest YouTube Statistics, the platform has reached 2.6 billion users worldwide making it the second-most popular social network behind Facebook.
