The Clothing and the Fashion Industry is the second most contributor of pollution in the world, after oil and petroleum, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTD). It was estimated that each year 1.2 billion tons of greenhouse gasses are emitted, 93 billion cubic centimeters of water are consumed, and half a million tons of microplastics and fibers are dumped into our oceans– All because of the fashion industry alone. On top of that, the industry is also known for using toxic dyes and pesticides in cotton farming which contributes to the harmful effects to our environment. These numbers are expected to be tripled in the year 2050.
With all the worrisome impact of the fashion and clothing industry to our world, leaders and activists stand up to make one step at a time towards sustainability and environmental awareness. One of these activists is Aditi Mayer, a Punjabi American creative exploring sustainability, fashion, and social justice through the lens of decolonization and intersectionality.
Since the year 2014, this Los Angeles based creative is dedicated to her craft. Aditi Mayer has been using her platforms– photography, film making, journalism, and modeling to open conversations on identity, gender, labor, and the environment. At the age of 25, she has already been a speaker on numerous seminars discussing ethical fashion practices and was named National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellow in 2020 where for a year she documented the environmental effects of India’s Fashion industry.
Ultimately, Aditi Mayer believes that consumer education, building the worker’s power, and holding corporations accountable is what will change the future of fashion, and later on our own future as well. We, as people who consider clothes as a necessity, could also participate in changing this future. Some of Aditi Mayer’s practices include doing closet cleansing where she segregates her clothes whether she wants to use them or swap them with friends. She also upcycles and tailor clothes to give it a fresh and new look. And lastly her favorite is exploring her parents' clothing pieces! All these we can also do and apply as a step closer to sustainability. If you want to further explore Aditi Mayer’s work and advocacy, you may visit her website via aditimayer.com
