The Encouraging Change of #StopAsianHate Movement

Stop Asian Hate is a slogan created by the Stop AAPI Hate organization in connection with the surge of Asian hate crimes in America. Last 2021, a huge increase of 140% since the 2020 crime reports was reported in San Francisco alone. The protest slogan has become a trademark for both Asian Americans and non-Asians in expressing their despair to the government and to all the citizens of the world. The support that this movement gathered from prominent down to the ordinary citizens all of the world became a ray of hope to Asian Americans.

Hate and discrimination are social issues that have been long in existence. Despite the disheartening situations of Asian hate in America, it has caused numerous effects that show hope. The “Stop Asian Hate Movement” increased awareness about anti-Asian racism. There was a survey conducted by the University of California, Los Angeles between 2017 and 2021. It says that the number of people in percentage covering demographic groups who think that Asian Americans encountered discrimination doubled at 23% in 2021 compared to only 10% in 2016. This survey shows that through the years, there has been improvement in awareness about the social issue which can lead to more progressive change.

We all know that education is one thing that nobody can take away from a person. Being informed and educated about different communities are important to stop discrimination and hate. It serves as a bridge to further understand one another despite having different places of origin and ethnicities. For instance, there have been bills that were passed which require schools to Asian American history such as in the state of Illinois. By educating students about what happened in the past that led to the present in terms of Asian Americans, this would help in breaking stereotypes and would create deeper understanding about the community. This will also show that although there may be differences in culture and traditions, Asians are just the same as any other human beings.

There are numerous organizations for Asian and Pacific Islanders out there and there are also bills that have been passed to help in stopping hate and discrimination towards Asians. With all of those said, what can you do to further help keep this movement alive?

Take your involvement to another level. It’s one thing to advocate for change on the Internet by sharing posts and voicing your opinions but it’s different when you actively participate in organizations and reach out to other communities of color. Any step no matter big or small counts in making the world a better place for Asians and the rest of the world.
